How to learn Bengali

A clear, step-by-step plan for learning Bangla from zero, with free audio lessons at every step. No experience needed.

Why Bangla

Why learn Bengali?

Bengali, or Bangla, is spoken by roughly 250 to 300 million people, which makes it one of the ten most spoken languages in the world. It is the national language of Bangladesh and an official language in the Indian states of West Bengal and Tripura, with large communities in the UK, the US, the Middle East and beyond.

People learn Bangla to talk with a partner's family, to reconnect with their heritage, for work and research in Bangladesh, to travel, or to enjoy one of South Asia's richest literatures, from Rabindranath Tagore, the first non-European winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, to Kazi Nazrul Islam. And Bangla is a language people fought for: read the story of 21 February.

The plan

Learn Bengali in six steps

Tap the play buttons to hear each example.

  1. Tune your ear to Bangla sounds

Spend your first few days just listening. Bangla has a few sounds English doesn't, like breathy ভ (bh) and two kinds of t. Hearing them early makes everything after easier. Our sound pairs are a good place to start.

  2. Learn greetings and survival phrases

Ten phrases will carry you through your first conversations: hello, how are you, my name is, thank you, I don't understand, how much is it.

    আপনি কেমন আছেন?apni kemon achhen?How are you? (polite)
    আমি ভালো আছি।ami bhalo achhi.I'm good.
    আমি বুঝিনি।ami bujhini.I didn't understand.

See all of them in basic Bengali phrases.

  3. Get comfortable with numbers

Numbers come up everywhere: prices, times, phone numbers, ages. Learn 1 to 10 and the tens first, then the rest in groups. Our Bengali numbers 1 to 100 guide has audio and tricks.

    দাম কত?dam koto?How much is it?
  4. Learn how a sentence is built

Bangla puts the verb at the end: subject, object, verb. Once that clicks, you can build hundreds of sentences from a small set of words.

    আমি ভাত খাই।ami bhat khai.I eat rice. (I rice eat.)
    আমি বাংলা শিখি।ami bangla shikhi.I'm learning Bangla. (I Bangla learn.)
  5. Start the script, a few letters at a time

You can speak without it, but the script opens up signs, menus, messages and songs. Learn it in small letter groups and read real words straight away. Start with the Bengali alphabet.

  6. Talk to real people

Speak with Bangla-speaking friends, family, colleagues or a tutor as early as you can. Short, regular conversations do more than long study sessions. If you'd like a guide, see learning Bangla with a tutor.
