Bengali digits
Bangla has its own set of ten digits. They work exactly like the digits you already use: same place values, same decimal system. Only the shapes are different.
Watch out for ৪ (4), which looks like an 8, and ৭ (7), which looks a little like a 9.
Numbers 0 to 100
The numbers 1 to 10 and every ten (20, 30, 40…) have audio. From 11 to 99, every number is its own word. Tens are highlighted.
Some numbers have more than one common spelling or pronunciation, for example উনত্রিশ or ঊনত্রিশ for 29. The forms here are the ones you will hear most in Bangladesh.
Tricks for remembering 11 to 99
- Numbers ending in 9 count down. ঊন (uno) means "one less", so ঊনত্রিশ, unotrish, is "one less than thirty": 29. The same works for 39, 49, 59, 69, 79 and 89. 99 is the exception: নিরানব্বই.
- Look for the ten inside the word. 31 to 38 end in ত্রিশ (30), 41 to 48 in চল্লিশ (40), 61 to 68 in ষট্টি (from ষাট, 60) and 71 to 78 in ত্তর (from সত্তর, 70).
- Learn the ones you will actually use first. Prices, ages and times. Then fill in the rest group by group.
Hundred, thousand, lakh and crore
For hundreds, add শো (sho) to the number: পাঁচশো, pachsho, is 500. Above a thousand, Bangladesh uses lakh and crore rather than million.
| Number | Bangla | Say it | Meaning | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | একশো | eksho | one hundred | |
| 1,000 | এক হাজার | ek hajar | one thousand | |
| 1,00,000 | এক লাখ | ek lakh | one lakh (100,000) | |
| 1,00,00,000 | এক কোটি | ek koti | one crore (10 million) |
Two handy extras: দেড় (der) means one and a half, so দেড়শো is 150. আড়াই (arai) means two and a half, so আড়াইশো is 250.
Prices and money in taka
The Bangladeshi currency is the taka, টাকা. Here is what you will hear and say at a shop or market.
